July reminds us of the love we have for our nation, encourages us to celebrate the freedoms we have as a people, and provides another opportunity for us to gather with our friends and family.
The ability to love freely, celebrate freely, and freely enjoy the blessings in our lives should never be taken lightly. Since this month’s holiday will involve eating together, we will focus on some Americana tablescapes that will help set the atmosphere for your celebration, whether indoor or out!
1. Start With the Basics
As you begin to plan your celebration, you will need to decide the location of your get-together. Will you be hosting in your own home? Will your set up be indoors or outdoors? Have you rented a park pavilion? How many picnic tables will there be? Are you meeting at a restaurant? Will they allow you to decorate their tables? Is it a buffet? Will people be served? It is self-serving?
As you think through the location and table set-up you will have, you can then decide what foundation to build on. A beautiful dining table, either indoor or out, doesn’t need a table covering at all. Let the richness of the table finishes set your base color and build on that. However, a table in poor condition or plastic tables will need to be covered. An outdoor picnic table with many children around may need a covering that can be easily wiped off, handle moisture and spills, and thrown away at the end of the day.
Knowing the basics will get you started on how to proceed in your Americana decor.
2. Add Some Layers
Although it is such a delight to prepare and serve our food, you want to help set the mood for a fun party! Now that you have decided the location and table you will use for your event, we can do a little bit of “extra” and go beyond a tablecloth or not.
If you are using a table cloth, select a simple, solid color for a foundation. A crisp, classic white is always appreciated. Not only because it looks stunning, but it is also easy to bleach in case food spills happen. If you choose not to use a tablecloth, because you want your table to shine, that is fine too! Now it is time to have fun with layers!
Layers add a multi-dimension to your table and bring it to life in a 3D fashion. Add a table runner in a fun pattern. Use your imagination and think outside the box. Go to the fabric story and have cut what you need and then run it down the center of your table. It could be navy stripes, white stars on a solid background, red and white gingham checks, or even a fun patriotic print. You can move away from traditional fabric and use a burlap runner, or white cheesecloth. There are SO many ideas for a fun table runner. The point is to move beyond the sole table covering.
You can also layer your table setting. Instead of a simple plate, add a layer underneath it. Is that a slice of a log? A piece of themed scrapbook paper with fun cut edges? A larger coordinating plate in a different pattern or color? Layer your napkin and your silverware in various colors, sizes and patterns for a place setting that screams “pick me!”

3. Finish With A Bang!
Once your table is layered and set, it is time to add some fun embellishments. Pinterest can fill you up with ideas, and it doesn’t have to be costly to add a huge statement.
Here are just a few ideas:
- Red, white and blue candy sprinkled around.
- Metal soup cans filled with sprinklers for when it gets dark.
- Spray painted mason jars to hold utensils or fresh flowers.
- White cream pitchers filled with American flags.
- White glassware or metal buckets filled with blueberries, strawberries, watermelon and/or marshmallows for a help-yourself kabob.
Again, it is all about taking your festive table and stepping it up one more notch to finish your 4th of July tablescape off with a bang!
We hope you have a safe and exciting celebration with your friends and family! If you need more indoor or outdoor dining options to host celebrations like this, we hope you will come by and see us! We would love to help bring your hosting ideas to life!
