Are you getting tired of seeing the same four walls?

If so, now may be the time to shake things up a bit and rearrange your furniture. Often it only takes an hour or two to give your room or your home a fresh new look and feel.

Before we get into the fundamentals of a successful room arrangement, let’s talk about the purpose of your furniture.  Furniture is used to divide larger rooms or to lay out a traffic flow through a home. Determining how you want to direct people through your home is the first step in laying out a good furniture placement plan. Think about how you want the room to function and what essential items you need within arms reach when placing accent pieces. This is especially critical in the bedroom and living room areas.

If you’re looking to give your home a fresh look, here are some simple tips to keep in mind.

Measurements Matter

Take a few extra minutes to measure your space and the size of your larger pieces. We’d hate for you to be halfway through your new room arrangement only to figure out things won’t fit where you planned.  Having the correct dimensions handy will set you up for the next stage, which is planning.  Plan out your traffic paths and stick to at least three feet “walking room” between furniture.

Keep in Balance

Balance is essential in any space. Counteract a large piece with two smaller furniture pieces to keep symmetry in check. Allow for conversational areas by always allowing a chair or sofa to have a buddy. Where there is a seat, a hard surface must follow. Create spaces where two people can get comfortable and chat.

Be the Center of Attention

Gone are the days of pushing furniture up against the walls. Make the center of a larger room steal the show by placing furniture out and away from the walls.  Give especially sofas, breathing room by pulling them away from the walls to create the illusion of a larger space.

Create a Focus

While we don’t believe that every room needs flashy art or a huge lamp, every room does need a focal point. Position your furniture to highlight things like a great view, a fireplace, or a unique feature in the room.

Take Advantage of Technology

The Internet is full of free tools you can use to design a room. Room layout apps allow you to rearrange furniture and even go as far as helping you visualize how pieces will work together. Many have options to add everything from furniture pieces to small accessories.

Practice Feng Shui

Professional room designers believe that the wrong furniture placement leads to unrest in a home, while the proper placement provides a balance between harmony and contentment. If you want a home that promotes a sense of peace, be sure to incorporate some basic feng shui principles when rearranging it.

  • Add mirrors to create an illusion of space and reflect positive energy into the room.
  • Add a water element with a small fountain or a fish tank to stimulate the flow of the room.
  • Add house plants to invite a sense of wellness and growth.
  • Add a rug in the center of the room to ground and connect a family.

Bring in the Light

Dark rooms create a feeling of gloom, so take care to place lighting in areas that are easily accessible to brighten the room.

Lastly, remember that it’s your home, and there is no need to get stuck in a rut with an old furniture arrangement. Experiment with arranging different layouts and, most of all, have fun.  Move a chair, switch furniture to another room, and give your home a whole new lease on life.
